About Us
Our Mission: To become a leading manufacturer of high-speed electro-optic components and subsystems that provide key architectural advantages to optical networking systems manufacturers.
RIM Semi is an optical component and subsystem company focused on delivering high performance optical digital modulators with integrated drivers. These modulators are strategic components for DWDM system vendors such as Nortel, Cisco, and Ciena. The Company is currently completing the final prototypes of its primary products and will manufacture these components at its state-of-the-art, high-volume fabrication facility. The Company's fabrication facility and headquarters are located near Atlanta, Georgia.
Currently, system vendors use dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) at 2.5 or 10Gbit/s per channel in their state of the art long haul optical systems. Component vendors are struggling to meet demand at these speeds while facing some insurmountable challenges at 40Gbit/s. Modulators under development at 40Gbit/s require in excess of six volts to operate while the drivers being developed for these modulators are limited to operate at less that 4.5 volts. Currently, there is no known technology that can solve this disparity.
RIM Semi’s design of Lithium Niobate (LiNbO) 40Gbit/s optical modulators is superior to other modulation techniques and is based on the work done at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of California San Diego (UCSD). This patented design, integrated with the appropriate drivers, will result in modulators requiring less than 4.5 volts of drive voltage. Integrating the driver amplifiers in the same package will also increase the manufacturing yield and reduce system complexity for the telecom system vendor. The Company has a worldwide exclusive license from MIT on the design of the modulator.
According to RHK, 14% of the current $7 billion optical component market for DWDM systems is and will continue to be due to the sales of external modulators. 10 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s products will account for a $3.3 billion segment of this rapidly growing market by 2020. RIM Semi’s addressable market size increases by an additional $2.5 billion due to the integration of the drivers with the modulator. RIM Semi is positioned to be the leader in this market with its high performance integrated modulators.
RIM Semi’s management team consists of world-class technologists with experience in modulators, semiconductor lasers, and other devices for fiber optic communication systems. These individuals have worked for and led successful research and product development groups at Caltech/JPL, UCSD, MIT, Lucent, Corning, Rockwell, Nokia, and Thomson CSF.
The Company has completed three phases of venture financing for a total of approximately $34 million USD. The fourth phase of financing will be utilized to recruit the remaining personnel, establish the business development/sales channels, and expand the manufacturing plant.
